Rather than shaving a despondent teen’s hair, a stylist demonstrates a “lesson” with a 13-hour haircut. And she takes such good care of it!

Kayley Olsson has had plenty of horrible hair days. She works as a hairdresser at Capri Waterloo in Waterloo, Iowa, and gets to correct all of those nasty box-color jobs and butchered self-cuts—am I right, hair stylists? However, on Monday, August 7, she “had one of the hardest experiences” she’s ever had with a client. She explained it in a Facebook post!

“I had a 16-year-old girl come in who has been suffering from severe depression for several years.” She got to a point where she was so depressed and useless that she couldn’t even brush her hair; she told me she just got up to use the restroom.”The adolescent informed Kayley that she would return to school in a few weeks, but her school photographs were on Tuesday. Then she told the hairdresser to “just cut it off,” so she wouldn’t have to cope with the agony of combing it out.

According to Kayley, “she called herself worthless for it.” Kayley’s heart broke as she heard the young girl reveal her self-esteem issues. Her coworker, Mariah Wenger, and she did everything they could to save the girl’s hair for her. Kayley hopes that her client’s condition will serve as a “lesson” to others: “Mental health is a thing, it affects people all over the world and of all ages!”

Parents should take it seriously and not simply push their children away and urge them to get over something they can’t. “A child should never feel so insignificant that he or she refuses to brush their hair.” On Monday, the teen sat in Kayley’s chair for eight hours and on Tuesday, she sat for five hours. “We finally made this beautiful girl smile and believe she is valuable!”

She told Kayley as she was leaving, “I will actually smile for my school pictures today, you made me feel like myself again.” Depression DOES EXIST. It is not picky about who it attacks, and it, like Satan himself, comes to steal, kill, and destroy. All praise to this wonderful hairdresser for seeing this teen’s true worth and going out of her way to help her beat depression.
