I’d been saving for years to take my dream vacation to Italy. Tickets booked, bags packed, I was ready to leave in just three days. Then my friend called: her elderly neighbor had no family and had just been released from the hospital after surgery. She needed someone to help with meals, cleaning, and medication. Without thinking too long, I canceled my trip. For the next two weeks, I cooked, cleaned, and kept her company.
At first, she barely spoke, but slowly, she opened up about her life, her late husband, and her love for music. On my last day with her, she handed me a small envelope. Inside was a photo of her as a young woman in Rome, with a note: “You may have missed Italy, but you found something even more beautiful — friendship.” And she was right.
