This year was different from others because it was Michael’s last year of high school, and there would be a prom. And what is a prom without a date? Michael Ganchevsky is a lovely lad and a class favorite; he could invite any girl to the prom and she would agree to accompany him. And this isn’t an exaggeration. However, not a single student received an invitation two weeks before the holiday. And here is the context for such an outcome:

His grandmother Josephine assisted Michael in his graduation preparations; she told him that she did not attend her graduation in 1961. Her family was impoverished, and her parents just could not afford to buy their daughter an evening gown. The girl did not wish to dress casually. «Better no prom than some,» she reasoned at the time.

Following the grandmother’s narrative, Michael did not hesitate and offered her to the prom as a date. The grandmother first declined, claiming that she was too old to travel. But, after considerable persuading, she agreed!

“It was the best day of my life, thanks to my grandson,” Josephine admitted in an interview.
