This 9-year-old girl’s cerebral palsy didn’t stop her from saving her baby brother from drowning.

Lexie Comeau-Drisdelle demonstrated to the world that heroes come in all shapes and sizes. Despite her disability, the nine-year-old girl from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, saved her one-year-old brother from drowning in their family pool! Perfectly demonstrating to the world that not even a disability can stop a little girl with an intelligent mind and a caring heart.

Lexie is unable to walk or speak due to cerebral palsy. Despite being confined to a wheelchair, she has always been a devoted and dutiful sister to her 1-year-old brother, Leeland.

Lexie’s family members were all busy preparing the house and cooking meals to share with her friends and loved ones in preparation for her ninth birthday. Because everyone was so busy cleaning the house and putting up decorations, even Leeland’s grandmother had to pitch in.

Leeland, a playful and curious one-year-old, seized the opportunity when her grandmother turned her back. He was able to successfully open the backdoor for the first time and bolted out towards the outdoor pool in an instant.

Lexie, the innocent boy’s loving sister, was right beside him and witnessed what happened. Lexie knew she had to do something even though she couldn’t run after her brother or call out his name to stop him.

The little girl recognized the gravity of the situation and did what she could… Lexie yelled! Lexie let out a bloodcurdling scream that alerted all of her family members. They stopped what they were doing to attend to Lexie, believing that something bad had happened to her.

Nancy Comeau-Drisdelle, Lexie’s grandmother, was the first to enter the room and discover the nine-year-old girl screaming at the top of her lungs and pointing to the open back door. In less than a minute, the 1-year-old boy wandered around and fell into the pool, drowning.

“When my mom told me what was going on, I quickly looked out the window and there, at the edge of the pool I saw his little head,” Lexie’s mother, Kelly Jackson said, recounting a heart-stopping moment. “I began to panic, and my mom quickly ran towards him and pulled him out.”

Lexie, being a smart and intelligent young lady, was able to quickly summon assistance and save her adorable little brother’s life. Things could have taken a tragic turn if she hadn’t acted quickly.

«It was terrifying at the time.» We hugged him a million times because we knew it wasn’t going to end well. Life can change in two seconds, and we’re just thankful Lexie was quick to alert us,» Kelly added, expressing gratitude for Lexie’s quick reaction.

Following the incident, the family decided to install a gate around the yard pool and even secured it with a padlock to prevent similar accidents from occurring in the future.

Lexie’s admirable act of heroism was noticed by the people of Halifax Regional Council and the City’s Police Department due to her alertness, smartness, and quick action. Lexie’s bravery was recognized not only within the confines of the police department but also by the entire world when it went viral on Twitter.

«Heroes come in all shapes and sizes.» It was a joy to recognize Lexie for alerting her mother when her toddler brother dashed for the pool.» Mayor Mike Savage announced it on Twitter.

Lexie’s mother hopes that her strong and bright nine-year-old daughter will inspire others to recognize that people with cerebral palsy are intelligent and capable of understanding situations as well.

“Some people think that because they have a disability, they are not able to do things, but if she could walk, she would have grabbed him and he would have never gone out there,” Kelly expressed. “Her disability is all physical. She is a very bright girl.”

May Leah’s beautiful story remind everyone of us to see a person beyond their limitations. At the end of the day, the only disability in life is a bad attitude!
