Imagine seeing someone play the piano, sing, and create his or her own songs, and then learning to do all of this while blind. That very well sums up Stevie Wonder, who has accomplished all of those things during his career.

Stevie was born Steveland Hardaway Judkins in Saginaw, Michigan on May 13, 1950. Wonder’s first few months were eventful, to say the least, but, contrary to common belief, he was not born blind.

Due to his early birth, Stevie Wonder was put in an incubator when he was just 6 weeks old. In the incubator, he got too much oxygen, which damaged a part of his eyes.

The condition is known as Retinopathy of Prematurity, and it implies that the eyes’ development is halted, leading the retinas to detach. This causes blindness.

Stevie Wonder talked in an interview with Orpah about his childhood and how he lost his sight when he was just a few weeks old.

“A girl who was born one minute before me passed away.” “She couldn’t handle that much oxygen,” Wonder said.

Despite the fact that it has had a significant influence on his life, Wonder is not resentful of the doctor who made the fatal mistake of providing him with too much oxygen.

“No.” “There was this great hubbub once when I went to Saginaw, Michigan, and visited the hospital where I was born, and they gave me a special honor, “Wonder said.” “I suppose many were afraid I was going to sue the doctor.” But he had no intention of hurting me.

Stevie Wonder went on to the piano after studying the harmonica and drums. But it wasn’t all roses at first. People viewed him as the blind youngster who was constantly making noise, knocking on walls or boxes, singing and playing bongos at all hours.

In 2010, Wonder told Larry King, “Obviously, sound was incredibly essential to me.”

“So, when I was able to, you know, touch that thing called a piano, I was intrigued by it.”

Although he has said that he misses everything linked with sight, such as driving his wife and children around, being blind has not diminished his quality of life.

“It’s odd, but I never thought of being blind as a disadvantage, and I never thought of being black as a disadvantage,” he told The Guardian. What I am is what I am. I adore myself! And I don’t mean it egotistically-I adore that God has given me the ability to take whatever I have and create something out of it. ”
