The Jartefelger family from Norway defies all assumptions about living in the harsh Arctic region, demonstrating once again that where there is a wish, there is always potential. With the support of their friends and colleagues, husband and wife team Benjamin and Ingrid constructed a magnificent three-story ecological home beneath a distinctive dome that is ideal for living in cold climates.

Jartefelger, a new family, arrived on the island of Sandhornoya in 2013. The husband, wife, and four children moved in adverse weather conditions, yet it did not break them. And it is because of their amazing dome-shaped structure that they are able to save heat and energy throughout the whole surface of their house.

The property has 80 m2 of garden ground in addition to the three-story chalet. Because the wives are ecologists, we only have bio-products at home. They do not throw away waste water or food waste but instead use it to generate fertilizer for plants.

The extreme climatic circumstances in northern Norway were considered while developing the eco-house. A glass geodesic dome was built to endure strong winds and harsh temperatures.

It not only protects the structure from excessive moisture and wind, but it also creates a suitable microclimate on the inside through manual and automated ventilation windows.
