Steve Harvey has been an inspiration to Americans as a stand-up comedian, TV host, and defender of Christian values, from his turbocharged religion speeches to taking the bullet for the Miss Universe tragedy.
That’s why, when he met a certain man on an episode of Family Feud, his heart broke. While between tapings of his talk program, Steve recalled one of the most memorable occurrences of his broadcast career.
The presenter referred to this person as “sweating excessively” throughout the broadcast, adding that they had to change his clothes. Steve tried to lighten the situation by making a joke with him, but he knew something was wrong deep inside.
“He’d played three days and they hadn’t won the money, and he was a mess,” Steve said. Finally, this person won the $20,000 and instantly collapsed to his knees, crying profusely.
Steve said, “He simply dropped on his knees and was crying.” Even more interested in the man’s situation at this point, Steve said how touched he was to win the money.
The competitor then looked Steve in the eyes and stated, “Steve, I’m terminally ill.” I only have three months to live, and I can’t receive coverage because of my disease. This money is critical for my family.”
Steve was astounded by the man’s tenacity in trying to win a game show in his dying days for the sake of his family. Following that, Steve agreed to give him an additional $25,000 out of his own money.
Harvey’s unselfish gesture of compassion for this sick guy brings to mind Galatians 6:2: “Bear one another’s burdens, and you will fulfill the law of Christ.”
