The teacher was fired from school after giving her pupils low grades for not finishing their assignments

Diane Tirado, a history teacher in Florida for almost 15 years, had to discover a painful reality about the current public education system on her own dime.

Specifically, it seems that shielding pupils from disappointment has become more essential than teaching them life lessons.

It all began when the history teacher decided to offer her students a summer homework project that required them to maintain a journey diary similar to those carried by pioneers and explorers in the 1500s.

The idea was simple: make a notebook with maps, items, and text that could be built and finished in two weeks.

The history instructor was summoned to the principal’s office a few days later.

After several days of the assignment of the homework activity, students and parents began to protest that the project was too difficult for their children!

The principal scolded the instructor, much to her astonishment. But this wasn’t the only thing.

After the allotted two weeks, several kids, most likely with the encouragement of their parents, arrived in class without their assignment. They did not arrive in the classroom with a half-filled or incomplete notebook; instead, they arrived empty-handed!

As a result, the instructor gave them a “zero” (0) score, in accordance with the school’s assessment guidelines, since they had not provided her with anything to appraise or evaluate.

The administrator summoned the history teacher again, informing her that their “rules” truly meant that even if a student did nothing, they should still be issued a five (5) to prevent risking the rest of their school year.

The instructor disagreed since, according to her principles, a five (5) denoted a “badly done assignment,” but children who had done nothing deserved a zero (0)!

Her integrity and commitment have cost her much. The principal dismissed her on the spot because he didn’t want to face up to the mob of irate parents.

Diane Tirado had to leave the school right away and permanently after finishing her courses on a Friday afternoon, taken from the grounds by a school security officer.

Realizing she wouldn’t be able to say farewell to all of her kids, she wrote the following note on the classroom whiteboard:

Mrs. Tirado, the history teacher, photographed her message and chose to email it to all of her pupils as well as share it on her Facebook page. She had not anticipated touching such a raw chord in the public school system.

In reality, her uploaded statement had been shared and commented on hundreds of times in only a few hours, sparking a controversy that finally reached the TV channels.

The discussion, which is still ongoing, is about striking a balance between academic rigor and judgment. Many people have spoken out in favor of the history teacher, stating that instructors have the right to teach not just classroom courses but also life ones.

Receiving a failing grade is critical for pupils! It enables them to feel defeated, which should encourage pupils to take greater responsibility for their actions and the consequences, motivating them to achieve their best.
