Declan had a heart attack a few years ago, which resulted in Locked in Syndrome. It is a condition in which a patient is completely conscious but unable to move or speak vocally owing to total paralysis of almost all voluntary muscles in the body, save the eyes. Declan connects with his family in this manner.
