Every day, James Schweikhard walked his daughter to school, but something seemed completely wrong when school authorities took a closer look at the duo. The girl’s primary school notified the cops, who followed the father to his SUV and were surprised by what they discovered inside.

The 41-year-old father had just relocated from Oklahoma with his 10-year-old daughter to Lakewood, Colorado, but their circumstance was not typical. James Schweikhard said he had to depart his native state because staying there was a greater danger than starting over in the Denver metro region. However, it didn’t take long for him to run into the police, who were about to change the course of his day when they looked closer at his vehicle.

After a few months of residing in Colorado, James enrolled his daughter in school. Administrators noticed she was arriving late to classes and appeared tired after several weeks of driving to and from campus. James returned to his parked SUV after walking his daughter to school one day to find it surrounded by Lakewood police officers. “When I saw them staring at my vehicle, I said, ‘Officers, what’s going on?'” James remembered.

The police were merely there to assist, but it was an unusual incident for James, who is not accustomed to receiving assistance from authorities. After fleeing Oklahoma in quest of a better life, James and his little daughter had been living in his SUV, which was overflowing with their stuff. “I loaded everything we had into the vehicle there and we simply drove here,” he said. “It was more dangerous to remain in Oklahoma.” I couldn’t find work and couldn’t find a place to live.

The homeless family was only struggling to get by, but just when things were looking good, James’ vehicle broke down. Unfortunately, his inability to find reliable transportation lost him his job. He had been bringing his daughter to school when the car broke down, and it was clear to campus employees that the vehicle was more than just a mode of transportation; it was also their home. Out of concern for the young student, they notified local authorities.

Lakewood Police Officer James Butler was on the site investigating the school’s complaint when he began chatting to James and heard about his and his daughter’s heartbreaking story. But Butler did not only listen; he chose to act, and he acted quickly out of compassion for this guy and his kid.

Butler put the family into a shelter right away. He then arranged for Ace Towing to take their vehicle to Sun Valley Automotive, and both firms kindly contributed their time and services. “It was the proper thing to do,” Butler said, “since any of us may be in that scenario at any point in our lives.” It is the ethical thing to do to help another human being.

“It feels incredibly different to support someone you know is struggling,” said Jere Burton, owner of Sun Valley Automotive.

People in the Lakewood community wanted to assist after hearing James Schweikhard’s tale, and a few companies gave James, who has been homeless for a long time, a job. As a consequence, James and his daughter could move into their first apartment in almost two years. “I guess I’m shocked,” he said. “This has rekindled my faith in mankind.”

People sent James and his daughter money, dishes, furniture, and clothing. Sgt. Dave Hoover kept donated goods in his garage for a few weeks while James’ housing application was being processed. “It all comes down to being a member of the community,” he said. “I’m impressed at how rapidly we were able to do this.” I’ve always been taught that you should always provide a helping hand rather than a handout. “James has put forth a lot of effort to pull himself together.”

James Schweikhard is moved that anybody, particularly a policeman, would go to such lengths for the most vulnerable members of their community. “I’m overjoyed,” James added. “I think it’s amazing. I think it’s very wonderful. It’s extremely unexpected but very cool,” said the grateful parent.

We all have the power to assist others in need, and we may be the ones who need that compassion at some point in our lives. A whole community came together to help a family who had been robbed. We can all do something, no matter how large or small. Every act of kindness has a huge impact on people’s lives.
