At Balmoral Castle on Thursday, Queen Elizabeth passed away at the age of 96 while surrounded by her family. Her grandchildren include both Prince William and Prince Harry, who had previously traveled to the UK to attend a charity event but had been diverted to Scotland after learning that their grandmother was ill. Her offspring include the recently sworn-in King Charles III. Now, he and his spouse Meghan Markle have honored Britain’s longest-reigning head of state.
A brief note was posted on the Archewell Foundation website by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in the hours following the announcement of Queen Elizabeth’s passing by Buckingham Palace. “In loving memory of Queen Elizabeth II. 1926-2022.” The couple’s brief note was written on a black background. Access to the website has been temporarily suspended.
The pair has previously paid respect to a deceased family member on their website. When Prince Philip, Elizabeth’s husband of 73 years, passed away in April 2021, Prince Harry used Archewell to share a touching remembrance of his grandfather. At the moment, he stated that “He will be recognized as the longest reigning consort to the Monarch, a decorated serviceman, a Prince and a Duke.” But to me, like many of you who have lost a loved one or grandparent during the painful course of this past year, he was my grandpa: a legend of banter, a maestro on the grill, and cheeky to the very end.

It takes time to craft that kind of heartfelt ode, and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle haven’t had that luxury to fully absorb the loss of such an inspirational woman. A woman who was so dear to them both that they named their 1-year-old daughter Lilibet “Lili” Diana in her honor, paying homage to a moniker given to Queen Elizabeth by her own father King George VI, when she was a young girl.

Other members of the royal family, in addition to Prince Harry, have paid tribute.Following his mother’s departure, King Charles III released a statement, writing, “We sorrow terribly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother. I am confident that the nation, the Realms, the Commonwealth, as well as a large number of people all over the world, will be devastated by her passing.
In the days, weeks, and months ahead, there will no doubt be more tributes paid to Queen Elizabeth, especially by those who knew her well.
