87-year-old elderly man spends Thanksgiving alone on the subway; ‘Be our guest,’ a faint voice from behind says – Today’s Story

An elderly woman forced to spend Thanksgiving alone on the subway is shocked when a voice from behind her offers, “Be our guest.” She turns around and notices a lovely young lady behind her, fully oblivious that this young lady is exceptional.

Harriet, 87, was a cheery woman until her husband Marcus died three years ago of a heart attack. It was as if her cheerfulness remained in the grave with Marcus after he was buried.

Harriet could still smell Marcus when she got home after Marcus’ burial and fell asleep on her bed. How could God be so cruel as to remove him? Marcus hadn’t he promised her he’d always be there for her? He had breached his word. Harriet’s heart stopped beating.

Harriet soon developed memory problems and was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Her memories of Marcus began to fade, and her greatest worry was losing them.

Harriet awoke one morning and checked the notebook she kept next her bed. She wrote everything down after she was diagnosed. It was extremely beneficial to her when she thought she was missing something.

Harriet’s eyes welled up with tears when she realized it was Thanksgiving. She had no one with whom to celebrate. Her friends were scattered across the country, she and Marcus had never had children, and she knew her neighbors would be spending the holiday with their family.

“Darling…,” she sobbed to her late spouse. “We should have had kids.” We could have taken in a foster child. It’s entirely my fault…”
Marcus and Harriet felt their love for one other was enough when they realized they couldn’t have children. But Harriet now regretted her decision.
“But no, I’m not going to be sad!” Harriet told herself. “Today is a momentous occasion. “I should thank God for what I have.”

So Harriet forced a grin and chose to spend the day where she met her darling husband Marcus, the love of her life. Despite her difficulty remembering, she would never forget where she met her love.
Harriet put on the lovely clothes and coat Marcus had given her and proceeded towards the subway. She clutched a cup of her favorite coffee in one hand and the food she had ordered with it in the other. It was marketed as a special Thanksgiving feast at the restaurant.

Harriet sat on the subway steps, said a little prayer, and sipped her coffee. She observed people getting off the train and hugging their loved ones, and even though she knew in her heart that everything was fine, tears welled up in her eyes.

“Oh, what a lovely day. “Why can’t I be happy, sir?” she wondered. She took a picture of Marcus from her purse and began chatting to him as if he were alive.
“I’m missing you, darling.” You see, I can’t be happy no matter what. It’s dreadful today without companionship. Oh, how I wish we had more time together…”
“Be our guest,” said a tiny voice from behind her.

“Who is he?”
Harriet spun around, surprised by the voice, and saw a gorgeous young girl with a broad smile behind her. “Was that you, child?” she inquired, ashamed, and the girl nodded.
“Yes. “Would you like to join me and my mum for Thanksgiving dinner?”
Harriet was taken aback. What was the identity of the young lady who had invited her?

Harriet scowled when a woman emerged behind the girl. “How good to see you here, Mrs Morgan,” the woman replied. I recognized you the moment I stepped off the train!”
Harriet had no idea who the girl or woman was. How did they know who she was?
“I’m sorry, but have we ever met?” “My memory isn’t in great shape,” she added, referring to her Alzheimer’s disease. Harriet sobbed when the woman introduced herself.

“Do you remember working as a teacher?” inquired the woman. “My name is Lydia. Mrs Morgan, here is my daughter Isla. I’m sure you recall the girl who was always worried and had the lowest test scores, but you always believed in her.”
“Oh, no!” – Through her tears, Harriet smiled. “That was such a long time ago!” I had no idea my student would remember me! Lydia, my darling… Yes, I recall now!”

“How could I possibly have forgotten about you, Mrs Morgan?” You always believed in me and fought with my parents to get me into my preferred college. And it is because of you that I am now a successful architect. I haven’t got the opportunity to thank you in person. If you don’t mind, please join us for Thanksgiving. It would be an honor if you could join us.”
Harriet couldn’t say no. She went to Lydia’s house with her family, and it was one of the nicest Thanksgiving dinners she’d ever had. Harriet was transported back in time by the aromas of roast turkey, mashed potatoes, homemade cranberry sauce, and pie.

Harriet thanked God before dinner, as they all prayed together.
In her prayer, she said, “Thank You, Lord.” “Thank You for giving me a loved one to keep me company. “I’m grateful for what I have.”
Harriet began to pay Lydia and her family frequent visits after that day. Lydia was heartbroken to learn that Harriet was alone, and the two women grew closer as one family from then on.
