‘The Carol Burnett Show’ had a fantastic cast of characters. Many fantastic guest stars have joined the fun over the years. Carol and her friends are joined in this episode by the incomparable Vincent Price and Joan Rivers in Season 8, Episode 14.
Carol’s famous ‘Fireside Girls of America’ sketch always includes a victim of Carol’s blackmailing methods. Vincent Price is the guest star this time. Carol confronts him in a bookstore, and she begins to yell, revealing why she is there.
“The question is, sir, what is becoming of today’s younger generation?” she says. She tries to persuade Vincent to donate money to the Fireside Girls. He gives her a dime, and she looks disappointed, so she performs more antics to get more money, such as guilt-tripping him, mocking him, and asking him to sign her copy of the book he wrote. Carol reverts to old tricks, threatening to expose Vincent’s infidelity to his wife. She always gets her money in the end.
Joan Rivers was another fantastic guest star. She recalls leaving Brooklyn as a “ugly, flat-chested little girl,” and now she’s here. Viola! “An ugly little flat-chested woman.” She claims that she is not flat-chested tonight because she purchased a brazier. Joan removes her coat and exclaims, “Viola!” She claims it’s all rubber, so when she falls, she can simply bounce back up.
“This is called the Push-up, shove over bra,” she advises flat-chested women. The crowd laughs as she says it simply takes all the excess skin from your stomach and pushes it up into your breast area.
In another amusing sketch, Harvey Korman and Carol are two performers getting ready for their final night performance when their understudies, played by Vincent Price and Vicki Lawrence, walk in. Harvey and Carol treat them rudely, and Vincent and Vicki plot their demise.
As Harvey returns backstage for a prop in the middle of the scene, Vincent drops a suitcase on his foot. Harvey returns to the stage with a limp. When Carol goes to get her prop, the same thing happens. Vicki trips and falls, but she recovers and returns to the stage. Harvey and Carol try to keep the scene going despite their injuries. The entire episode is filled with amusing sketches and Joan’s one-of-a-kind stand-up routine.
