It’s incredible how a 13-year-old Alabama boy who had been declared brain-dead regained consciousness.
Trenton McKinley was riding on a small trailer being carried by a dune buggy outside a friend’s house last March when his friend abruptly applied the brakes, flipping the trailer and knocking McKinley to the ground.
He was taken to the emergency room with seven skull fractures. Jennifer Reindl, his mother, told Fox 10 that her son had been dead for 15 minutes.
‘When he returned, they said he’d never regain his normal state… [and] that if he survived at all, he’d be a vegetable,’ says the author.
After a few days, Reindl and McKinley’s father made the difficult decision to remove their son from life support and authorize organ donation.
His mother, on the other hand, reported on a Facebook page dedicated to his recovery that McKinley began showing signs of brain activity just one day before they were supposed to say their final goodbyes. His feet moved first, followed by his hand.
McKinley told Fox 10 after his miraculous recovery that he believes he was in heaven while his body was on life support.
According to God, there is only one possible explanation. There is no other way. Even physicians agreed.
McKinley has had three brain surgeries since the tragedy, and while he has made remarkable progress thus far, he still has a long way to go in his recovery.
He has lost 50 pounds, suffers from seizures and nerve pain, and is currently missing half of his skull, which will be replaced during a future surgery.
