“I am aware that many people are angry with me,” Dorsey tweeted after Twitter’s new owner cut jobs. “I am responsible for why everyone is in this situation.”
Twitter founder Jack Dorsey has apologized to the company’s recently laid-off employees, who were laid off shortly after Elon Musk’s takeover.
Musk, 51, reportedly laid off many of Twitter’s 7,500 employees last week, just days after agreeing to buy the company for $44 billion. Tesla’s CEO stated on Friday that he had “no choice” but to reduce his company’s workforce due to financial constraints.
Dorsey apologized to the affected employees in a pair of tweets on Sunday, the day after layoffs began.
“I am aware that many are furious with me,” he said, adding, “I am responsible for everyone’s predicament since I built the company too quickly. “Please accept my apologies.”
In Saturday’s tweets, Dorsey expressed his hope that the “strong and resilient” Twitter staff will “find a way” to overcome “whatever terrible the moment may be.”
“I do not anticipate that being mutual at this time…or ever…and I understand,” he said.
Multiple Twitter employees are currently suing Musk for allegedly violating the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN), which requires employers to provide at least 60 days’ notice prior to such a move.
Employees have asked the court to issue an order requiring Twitter to comply with the WARN Act (WARN) and prohibiting the company from requiring employees to sign paperwork waiving their right to sue the company.
Meanwhile, Dorsey is working on a new social app called “Bluesky,” which he believes will be “a rival to any corporation attempting to own the underlying basics for social media or user data.”
Dorsey, who resigned as CEO of Twitter in November 2021, appeared to support Musk’s decision to acquire Twitter at one point.
Dorsey referred to Musk as “the only solution I trust” for Twitter in April, when Musk first agreed to buy the company, despite his belief that no single person should control or manage the company.
“I believe his purpose is to expand the light of consciousness,” he said, adding that “Elon’s goal of developing the most trustworthy and inclusive platform” is correct.
