Two young people recently celebrated their 83rd wedding anniversary, making their marriage the longest in British history. Helen and Maurice Kay, 104 and 105, celebrated their anniversary with family in Bournemouth last week.
The couple met when Maurice Cai was working as a salesman for his father’s company. They have been married for 87 years.
Even though so much has changed, I’m grateful that we’re still together. We had a wonderful day, and our adorable great-grandchildren kept us occupied. I’m already looking forward to the next anniversary.
«I was shocked at how much I liked it,» Helen Kai said of the celebration held at their home 160 kilometers outside of London.
Two of the couple’s children, as well as six great-grandchildren and seven grandchildren, are still alive. According to their daughter Tina, they are «an inspiration to everyone they know,» and we «consider ourselves tremendously fortunate to have them.»
Her father was described by her as having a fantastic sense of humor, being sardonic, and being a wonderful person in general. Her mother was described as a fashionable, well-groomed woman who visits her hairdresser at least twice a week and gets a manicure every Friday.
If Helen Kaye hadn’t been waiting for her older sister to marry, the couple claimed they would have celebrated their 87th wedding anniversary today. After his marriage, Maurice Kaye took over his father’s factory and two London stores, which had been completely destroyed by the bombings.
In 1939, he joined the front lines and fought the Nazis. Following the war, the couple moved to Bournemouth, where they raised four children, two of whom survived to adulthood.
After the war damaged their factory, stores, and home in 1944, the couple relocated to Bournemouth and had four children.
Maurice Cai once quipped in a joke: “I didn’t anticipate it to last a week, but it’s wonderful, it lasts 80 years.” In this interview, Maurice Cai claimed to know the key to a contented family life: constantly coming to an agreement with his wife.
