An online article recently went viral about a neighborhood resource officer who decided to date a second grader to the daddy-daughter school dance. As a result, Van Buren school resource officer Nick Harvey and a little girl called Avey have formed an unlikely friendship.

Avey wished to attend the daddy-daughter dance. But, once her father died, she assumed she would never be able to attend the dance. Fortunately, life had other plans for her.
Harvey’s chief contacts his cops and requests that they accompany the children without their parents. Harvey soon decides to take the initiative for Avey. “I reached out to the mother because the last thing I wanted was to be rejected by a second-grader,” Harvey explained. “The next day, I formally asked if she’d be my date to the daddy/daughter dance.”

Avey is overjoyed, and the two decide to coordinate their outfits as well. They took countless photos and even rode in a limousine to purchase pizza on their way to the dancing event.
“It meant a lot,” Avey adds, “because I got to go and see all my friends there, and then I got to go with them and have a lot of fun,” Harvey told the interviewers that it was a night he’d never forget because he made so many memories.

Harvey says, “I embarrassed myself a little bit…I can’t dance at all.” However, the sweet girl, Avey, said the best part of the day was when they took pictures and danced together.
After the dance, Avey and the other children went out to get ice cream. They were later escorted home by a police vehicle. Harvey hopes to take Avey out for the dance every year.
