Few people can say they’ve been with the person they fell in love with when they were teenagers for more than 50 years.
Even fewer people may claim to be still married after years of correspondence.
Ina Garten, the renowned “Barefoot Contessa” and television broadcaster, has been married to Jeffrey for over 50 years. They met when they were 15 years old and are now 70 and 71 years old, respectively.
Garten and Jeffrey initially met in 1963, while Garten was visiting her brother at Dartmouth College. Soon after, he wrote her an introduction letter and included a photograph of himself.
Garten was supposedly filled with joy after reading the message and cried to her mother, “Mom, Mom, you’ve got to see this image of this guy.” He’s just lovely!
They began dating soon after. They married five years later, in 1968.
Following their wedding, Jeffrey was deployed to Thailand for a brief period of time. While serving in the army, he was required to continue writing letters to his future wife.
Garten also joined in, and the two wrote to each other remotely for a while. Because they could only connect on the phone once a year, letters were an important part of their relationship.
Jeffrey apparently wrote a letter to his wife every day while he was away from her.
When he eventually returned, they reconnected and began trying to set up dates. They began to travel to Paris on a regular basis, notably for their anniversary. They ultimately began to regard the city as a second home.
Jeffrey has spent years commuting to Yale University in Connecticut, where he is a professor in the school of business.
Because Ina worked from their East Hampton, New York, home, the two would mostly interact on weekends.
As a result, Jeffrey continued to demonstrate his love for his wife through daily letters to her.
When the COVID-19 epidemic briefly forced everyone indoors in 2020, the two were able to spend a lot of time together.
Even still, Jeffrey continued to write his wife loving notes!
