Many parts of the world consider all children to be born equal, regardless of gender.
However, in some parts of the world, whether a child is born a boy or a girl has a substantial impact.
During the 1980s, China enacted a policy that allowed only one child per family, resulting in many abortions depending on the gender of the child and parents abandoning their children.
A female is not always regarded with the same respect as a boy in China. A boy has a better chance of landing a job than a girl, not to mention significantly higher pay.

This kind of thinking has resulted in a slew of social concerns in China, most notably how society treats women.
Following the implementation of the “one-child” policy, many families with daughters elected to deposit them in orphanages in the hope that they might be adopted one day.
However, not many parents took the same approach, with the most common solution being to abandon them in the woods or on the street – in a shoe box.
Yu Shangzhong was one of the few persons who refused to watch this happen in front of his eyes.
According to Asian news, Yu Shangzhong and his partner adopted their first daughter 35 years ago, when Yu was 40 years old.
Four years later, Yu came upon an abandoned baby on the street. Yu couldn’t bear the thought of leaving the baby in a shoe box, so he carried her home.

Yu and his wife adopted the infant, and over the next few years, they adopted twelve more abandoned daughters.
His two younger daughters were discovered abandoned inside a shoe box in 1998. The twins arrived within a week of each other.
Despite having a large family, Yu and his wife’s life in Wenzhou, Chekiang province, was not easy.
Yu had to work as hard as he could during his part-time job as the family’s main income.
It took a lot of effort to feed all of the girls and put food on the table.
“We had some trying days. “When I was a little kid, my mother used to carry me on her back, collecting food scraps from the street or even begging for money from strangers,” his older daughter Yu Xaeisong told the South China Morning Post. “People gave us money and old clothing,” the narrator explains.
Due to the difficult circumstances in which they lived, Yu and his wife decided to find another couple to adopt his older daughters when they grew older.

This would increase the daughters’ chances of having a happy life. Four of the girls are currently enrolled in university, where they get little government financial aid.
Five of Yu’s daughters are still living with him and his wife.
One of the girls made a Chinese needlework portrait for Yu’s living room. Five Chinese characters mean ‘a quiet family shall thrive.’
After everything the family has been through, they have chosen to be optimistic and hopeful about the future.
Yu’s daughters also gave him a gold ring on his 70th birthday to show their affection.
This story is a lovely reminder of how fortunate some of us are to live in some places of the world.

And it’s difficult not to be impressed by Yu’s determination to aid these orphaned daughters, who are now his own!
