Thanksgiving Dessert Turns Deadly: Son Vomits and Turns Blue—Mom’s Heartbreaking Discoverion

Thanksgiving is a time for families to gather, but for one family, it turned into a tragic day. Oakley Debbs, 11, died as a result of a severe allergic reaction. The family had made a delicious lunch, including a cake with nuts, which Oakley was allergic to. Despite taking Benadryl, Oakley’s symptoms reappeared later in the evening, and his condition quickly deteriorated. Despite the efforts of emergency personnel, Oakley was unable to be saved.

Merrill, Oakley’s mother, blames herself for not using an EpiPen instead of Benadryl. According to Dr. Ruchi Gupta, a pediatrician, delayed allergy reactions like Oakley’s can be perplexing and quickly intensify. The family published an open statement thanking everyone for their support and emphasizing that no one should blame themselves for the tragedy.

In the aftermath of Oakley’s death, Merrill aims to raise awareness about food allergies, particularly in schools. She advocates for nut bans and created the “Red Sneakers” foundation to educate people about food allergies. Despite her efforts, Merrill continues to mourn the loss of her son, knowing she couldn’t save him.

A video that demonstrates how to use an EpiPen during an allergic reaction is included with the story. Sharing this story on Facebook is encouraged in order to increase awareness about the hazards of food allergies.
