A Heartwarming Adoption by a Florida Firefighter: A Coincidence That Changed Lives

A Florida firefighter who often saves lives in situations had a one-of-a-kind experience when he adopted a cute newborn girl from an infant drop box. He heard an alarm go off at his station one night at 2 a.m., signalling that someone had left a child in the Safe Haven Baby Box. Though false alarms were usual, he was surprised to find a tiny baby girl called Zoey quietly holding a bottle and looking up at him this time. They clicked right away, and he thought he’d discovered someone special.

The experience spurred thoughts of adoption for this firefighter and his wife, who had struggled for years to conceive. He addressed a note to the administrators after taking the infant to the hospital, expressing their willingness to adopt. He was wary but optimistic, fearful that the message might be misplaced and Zoey would be taken away. However, Zoey was safe and well in their house a few days later, and she formally became their daughter in April. The firefighter feels he found her by divine intervention.

He shared his story, hoping the baby’s birth mother would see it and find solace in knowing that her child is loved and well cared for. Safe Haven, the organization behind the baby boxes, has received 31 surrendered infants in 148 boxes across the country. Monica Kelsey, the program’s founder, expressed gratitude to the anonymous mother who chose to leave her child in a safe place.

The firefighter and his wife wanted the birth mother to know that her child is safe and loved beyond words. It had been a challenging journey for them to try to produce a child, but finding Zoey felt like a gift from a higher force. The firefighters’ adoption of the baby girl not only brought them joy, but it also brought attention to the need of the Safe Haven Baby Box program, which provides a safe option for parents in need.
