We all desire to experience this type of love in our life. We’re all looking for our soulmate.
Some people spend their entire lives searching for their other half, while others are fortunate enough to find that person immediately.
It was the same with Floyd and Violet Hartwig.
They married in 1947 and were pleased to stay together for the next 67 years. Even if that is incredible in and of itself, it was their final moments together that truly demonstrated how close they were.
After reading about their story, which made headlines in 2018, I was sure that not only does genuine love exist, but that we are all supposed to spend our lives with someone.
Floyd and Violet Hartwig met in elementary school and began a romance that would endure the rest of their lives. When World War II broke out, Floyd enlisted in the United States Navy. Hundreds of letters were exchanged between the two people throughout that time.

Here’s an excerpt from one of the letters, dated May 1947:
“Hello, honey, just a few words from your lonely blue sailor.” I adore you and miss you terribly. … I can’t wait to get out of here, honey.
“It’s not for me, but the Navy used to be pretty cool.” That was before I met the sweetest girl in the world.”
Floyd returned to his home country after WWII, and he and his wife purchased a farm in California. They have three children together after that.

Violet had dementia a few years ago, which was heartbreaking. Floyd looked after her in the couple’s house, but matters worsened when Floyd was diagnosed with kidney disease. Their children and grandkids were astonished, but Floyd and Violet’s bond became stronger. It was the last time they fell asleep in each other’s arms after being married for more than 67 years.
Floyd, who was 90, died in the hospital while Violet, who was 89, held his hand. Violet moved to the other side an hour after he died.
They were surrounded by their children, grandchildren, and even great grandchildren. The people they left behind were heartbroken to have lost both of them so fast, but they could take solace in the idea that this was exactly what Floyd and Violet desired. They may have even told their children that they intended to die at home together.
“They had a special bond, and I think that bond grew stronger over time.””Especially in their final months,” their daughter Donna Scharton recalls in a video designed to commemorate their love story.
