This is a truly fantastic story. Unborn baby extracted from womb for life-saving surgery, then…

This is an extremely astounding tale of using technology to save an unborn baby. An unborn baby was removed from the womb to have life-saving surgery, and then doctors returned him. Sam Drinnon considered himself fortunate to have another child. She was overjoyed at the prospect of expanding her family and welcoming her second kid into the world.

Her pregnancy was going swimmingly until doctors discovered a tumor inside her son’s heart during an ultrasound. Sam found that her baby Rylan might require surgery when she was 26 weeks pregnant. This meant that her unborn child would be removed from the womb and subjected to a dangerous surgery. Sam prayed to God to safeguard her baby the day she found out. She was terrified she was going to lose him!

She recalls calling her husband Dave and telling him, «A lot of emotions came very quickly.» I believed I was going to lose my baby, but the physicians assured me that they would refer me to the greatest team for treatment.»Rylan’s medical team includes Dr. Cass, who stated that Rylan’s illness was extremely uncommon. Indeed, it was so uncommon that he stated, «We see this condition in less than one in 100,000 pregnancies.»

These tumors can be detected in the center of the chest, outside or inside the pericardial sac that surrounds the heart. Rylan was on the inside, which was a far more perilous situation.» Rylan could only be spared if he had a three-and-a-half-hour surgery at 26 weeks. When surgeons opened Sam’s womb, they «half removed» Rylan. Once the doctors obtained access to Rylan’s chest and heart, they were able to immediately remove the tumor from his heart.

They restored the rest of his heart after the tumor was removed before putting him back into his mother’s womb. Rylan met his parents ten weeks after his mother gave birth, and not only was the procedure a success.

Dr. Cass was thankful and proud of his team. “I am very proud of our talented congenital heart surgery and fetal surgery teams that integrated seamlessly to successfully perform a complex lifesaving fetal surgery,” he said. Today, Rylan is a happy, healthy, and thriving baby boy. His story is a miraculous story that proves all life, no matter how small, born or unborn deserves a fighting chance. We praise God for the latest advances in technology and for saving this precious life.
