For Libby Huffer, her personal appearance had been a source of pain for years. She has had to receive that most dreaded confirmation from a doctor: It’s a tumor. Not only that — she had thousands of them.

Libby suffers from a condition called neurofibromatosis. This is a genetic condition that causes tiny tumors to form around nerve tissue. Luckily, the tumors are normally benign. Unfortunately, living with this condition is a nasty process.

Libby was diagnosed with neurofibromatosis at the age of five, as she recounted in an interview with The Doctors. The tumors did not become visible until she was a teenager. She was tortured at school by children, and even the simplest touch, such as a hug, caused agonizing pain. She was so used to being dubbed Lizard Breath that she changed her name from Elizabeth to Libby to avoid emotional distress.

This condition is treated with electrodesiccation. A CO2 laser helps smooth the skin after the tumors have been removed. However, each therapy costs thousands of dollars, and Libby would require numerous due to the quantity of tumors covering her body.

Libby had undergone several treatments before she appeared on the hit TV show The Doctors. Then the specialists offered to manually remove her remaining tumors. The treatment ended with a professional makeover.

The most heartwarming moment of the show came when Libby walked onto the stage after her makeover. Her daughter was in the front row of the audience. As her mother walked across the stage, she could not contain her excitement and amazement. She was in tears, exclaiming over the difference in her mother’s appearance.

Libby says that the years of being tormented about her looks took an emotional toll that is not yet healed. While there is healing still ahead of her, she has a loving daughter at her side to support her through the process. And while her daughter always loved her, regardless of how she looked, she is thrilled for her mom’s new lease on life.
