When our parents reach a certain age, we all begin to consider where they can reside. We want them to be safe at home, but if that isn’t possible, we must consider senior housing.
This is easier said than done because most nursing facilities are expensive, and even if we can afford them, most of us are concerned about whether or not they are receiving adequate care.
Schon began to consider where his parents could reside when they reached their golden years and saw that they were becoming weaker.
Bonnie and George Miller were both 87 years old. Bonnie collapsed and broke her shoulder as they were both starting to forget things.
Schon was so concerned about them that he realized he needed to act soon. Then he devised a scheme that caused his parents to cry when he showed them their new room.
Schon was concerned about his father, whose memory was deteriorating, and his mother, who was in a wheelchair following a fall.
The couple’s loving son from Bremen, Ohio, didn’t want to place them in a nursing facility, so he and his wife, Jeannie, began researching other choices.
“One can’t live alone without the other, and we didn’t want either of them to end up in a nursing home,” Schon told me.
Schon explained that after his mother collapsed and injured her shoulder, they considered moving to a house with a separate room for the mother-in-law.
When the kind couple couldn’t locate anything for their aging parents, they devised the most thoughtful solution.
“We decided to blow a hole in the basement wall, get rid of our fun stuff like the pool table, instruments, and karaoke area, and move them in so we could take care of them,” said Schon.
Schon and Jeannie are excellent models of how we should all strive to assist our parents after everything they have done for us.
