Sheriff and Faithful Canine Companion Share a Special Bond Until the End, Sharing a Tragic Death

Sheriff Dan McClelland and his crime-fighting canine partner named Midge share an incredibly heartwarming bond. After 44 years in law enforcement, Dan and his pup retired in 2016. Midge, the Chihuahua/Rat Terrier mix, was a loyal member of the force for nearly a decade.

When Dan realized that it was impossible to train little canines to detect drugs, he decided to hire Midge. Clearly, there was no obstacle preventing him from training the small yet powerful pooch!

Midge gained widespread recognition in her Ohio county. She gained global recognition when she was awarded the title of ‘smallest police dog’ in the 2006 Guinness World Records.

However, for this faithful canine companion, the only thing that truly mattered was remaining by Dan’s side.

Sherrif and his dog partner had a special bond.

Dan dedicated 13 years of his life to serving as the sheriff of Geauga County. Midge was always by his side. She had her very own bed right next to his desk. They were always together, like two peas in a pod.

The current Sheriff, Scott Hildenbrand, shared a lighthearted anecdote about how people would spot him in a parade and refer to him as “Midge and Whats-His-Name.” He joked, “I think she was more popular than him!”

After the Sheriff and his dog retired together, Dan, his wife Beverly, and Midge took a camper across the United States. Regrettably, Dan received a diagnosis of a brain tumor. He passed away in the hospital after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

It seemed as though Midge, his loyal canine companion, had a deep understanding of the situation. She passed away just a few hours after her friend took his last breath. Midge had a fulfilling and joyful life for a remarkable 16 years.

Their family mentioned that the two were laid to rest side by side. Dan and Midge had a bond that lasted a lifetime.

May Dan and Midge rest in peace. You put smiles on so many faces.
