Carlton Smith, a police officer at West Virginia University, gained widespread attention online for his impressive performance of the national anthem during a men’s basketball game. On January 12, university administrators asked Smith to perform the anthem at the last minute, as the scheduled singer was delayed by snow. Smith, who has been with the university’s police department for four years and is known among his colleagues for his singing talent, agreed, even though he was caught off guard.
