I Snatched My Tip Back Because of the Waiter’s Rude Behavior

Went out to a lovely restaurant with my husband last night to celebrate his well-deserved promotion. Everything was going smoothly until the very end, when the waitress’s entitled attitude completely spoiled the experience.
After receiving the check, I decided to leave a generous $10 tip on top of the $85 bill. As the waitress collected the payment, she exclaimed with a hint of disdain, “Only ten dollars? This isn’t the 50s anymore, you know.”

I couldn’t believe it. She had a very unpleasant and disrespectful tone. My husband was taken aback, his eyes widening in disbelief.

“Pardon me?” I muttered, instantly irritated.

“I believe that $10 on a $85 bill is a reasonable amount.”

The waitress responded with an exaggerated eye roll.

“It’s customary to leave a 20% tip nowadays, cheapskate. Don’t you know how to calculate that?

I was taken aback by her arrogant demeanor. The $10 tip amounted to over 11%, which is considered a respectable amount by any standard. I found her sense of entitlement quite off-putting.

“You know what,” I exclaimed, losing my composure. “Given your unpleasant attitude, you don’t even deserve a tip at all.”

I quickly grabbed the $10 bill from the table. The waitress was taken aback, and she began to express her displeasure in a very loud and disrespectful manner, hurling insults and creating quite a spectacle. Curious onlookers couldn’t help but turn their heads to see what was causing all the commotion.

My husband was embarrassed.

Eventually, the manager had to intervene and accompany the angry waitress away, as she continued to shout at me.

We had to leave without leaving a tip in the end.

I must confess that I may have overreacted, but her smug and condescending behavior truly annoyed me. After being so rude to a customer, she didn’t deserve anything. However, I’m facing intense discussions with others about whether I should have simply ignored it instead of causing a commotion. What are your thoughts on this?
