A heartwarming story of a lone kitten’s rescue from a drain pipe and joyful reunion with her cat family
In a heartwarming story, a courageous kitten found herself trapped in a drain pipe, but thanks to the kindness of strangers, she was eventually able to be reunited with her beloved cat family.
At a factory in Elkhart County, Indiana, workers stumbled upon a feral cat mother and her kittens in need of rescue. As they were attempting to ensure the safety of the kittens, one of them became frightened, swiftly made its way towards a gutter, and leaped straight down.
The gutter guard had been damaged. According to Missy McNeal of Catsnip Etc, the plastic gutter pipe extended three feet down before curving towards a manhole pipe. “The adorable kitten gracefully fell to the bottom, only to find the surface too slick to climb up.”
When help arrived, they tried a number of different approaches to figure out which pipe she had hidden in among the many underground lines. Despite their tireless efforts and countless hours spent searching with a camera, the elusive kitten remained out of their grasp.
As the clock neared midnight and the darkness enveloped the surroundings, they made the wise choice to postpone their plans until the morning, allowing fresh ideas to flourish. The following day, members of the community and Miller Sewer Cleaning came together to rescue the kitten trapped in the drain pipe.
“We devised a strategy to channel water through the pipe she leaped into, in an attempt to trace its course and determine her whereabouts.” The plan was successful, and they were able to identify the manhole connected to the pipe they were interested in. “The item was far from the spot where she had fallen, making it nearly impossible for us to find.”
In order to retrieve the kitten safely, it would require a brave, non-claustrophobic person willing to scoot through a narrow, dirty pipe with about an inch of sitting water.
Ashlee noticed the call for assistance on social media and volunteered to undertake the task. “She arrived at the location, descended into the manhole, and never looked back,” Missy recounted during an interview.
Ashlee approached the lone kitten, who immediately leaned towards her. After spending nearly 40 hours underground, she couldn’t wait to finally escape. “It was an incredible moment of relief that washed over all of us when Ashlee suddenly exclaimed that she had found the kitten.”
As soon as the little one was brought inside, she was gently wrapped in a warm towel. She was completely drenched, covered in mud, and shivering from the cold. They quickly brought her home to dry her off and began to warm her up using a heating pad and warm fluids (she was severely dehydrated).
“We provided her with Karo syrup to address her low blood sugar and eventually fed her using a syringe once she reached a suitable temperature,” Missy shared.
Meanwhile, the rescuers successfully ensured that the entire feline family was placed into foster care, leaving no one behind. Once the lone kitten showed signs of improvement, she was joyfully reunited with her mother and siblings.
She dashed over to her family and nestled beneath her mother’s chin.
This adorable little kitten was noticeably smaller than her siblings. It brought her immense joy to reunite with her crew and snuggle up to her mom for some much-needed tender loving care.
“They are working on being socialized and getting lots of love.”
It was truly a remarkable effort that spanned an entire day to rescue a precious little kitten. Now the little one can experience all the comforts of indoor living alongside her mom and siblings.
The tiny drain baby is now much livelier and weighs 11 ounces. Wow, what a resilient kitten!
