The song wowed the crowd, and Judge Simon Cowell said it was “by a mile” the best new song he’d heard all year. This helped Rainey get the points she needed to move on in the talent show.
The Irish singer crafted a captivating “moment” on stage, as she poured her heart and soul into a song with profound personal roots.
During her presentation to the Judges, she opened up about her heartfelt original song, “Please Don’t Go.” This deeply personal composition was inspired by the tragic loss of her nephew, who passed away just one day before his first birthday when she was still a teenager.
She confessed that it took her quite a while to craft a song about the subject. “Honestly, I was about to give up music, so I was like I want to make something for me that I believe in, so this song means more to me than I can actually, like, even describe.”
The 36-year-old singer admitted that her career has been quite a roller coaster ride. After writing the song years ago, she experienced a significant surge when she decided to create a video to complement the emotional ballad.
Following the immense popularity of the video, Rainey secured a record deal.
“Yeah, it was absolutely insane,” she shared with the blog in 2021. “I think anybody who’s ever had a viral video will tell you that it’s the most bizarre thing that can ever happen. Well, I had writers reaching out to me, eager to share the video. I was thinking to myself, ‘I don’t know… maybe?'”
However, it didn’t lead to the industry success she had been looking for.
“I think I probably didn’t fully know who I was back when I signed that deal,” Rainey told the judges. The journey from then until now has been quite challenging. It’s quite a challenging industry, isn’t it? You have to be resilient and I think sometimes when the downs come you have to be willing to kind of pick yourself back up and so here I am.”
Rainey made the bold decision to give it one more shot by bringing the song to AGT.
