During a candid 1990 interview with Los Angeles magazine, Newhart shared, “I have a tendency to find humor in the macabre. I would say 85 percent of me is what you see on the show. And the remaining 15 percent is an individual with a severely disturbed mentality.” His unconventional style of comedy had a profound and enduring influence on the genre.
