James Earl Carter Jr., commonly known as Jimmy Carter, was born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia. He served as the 39th president of the United States from 1977 to 1981. Before his presidency, Carter was a Georgia State Senator from 1963 to 1967 and held the office of governor from 1971 to 1975.
In 2002, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his unwavering dedication to resolving international conflicts peacefully, advancing democracy, and promoting human rights and social development through The Carter Center, a non-profit organization he established in 1982.
Carter has spent his entire life in Plains, born at the Wise Sanitarium where his mother worked as a nurse—making him the first U.S. president to be born in a hospital. In the 1920s, Plains had a population of around 600, where his father owned a general store and invested in farmland.
He met Rosalynn, his future wife, while attending the U.S. Naval Academy in 1945. After he proposed, she initially declined, honoring a promise to her father to wait until she graduated college. They married in 1946 after she completed her studies at Georgia Southwestern College.
In recent years, Carter has faced significant health issues, including a melanoma diagnosis in 2015 that had metastasized to his brain and liver. Although he was declared cancer-free later that year, his health has continued to decline. On February 18, 2023, The Carter Center announced that he had chosen to receive hospice care at home, focusing on spending his remaining time with family.
In the lead-up to his 100th birthday, his grandson, Jason Carter, shared a concerning update about the former president’s condition. The “spine-chilling four-word update” emphasizes the seriousness of Jimmy Carter’s health situation as he approaches this significant milestone.
Following several short hospital stays, a statement from The Carter Center revealed that Jimmy opted for hospice care instead of further medical intervention, with his family by his side and their request for privacy during this time.
Jason tweeted a reassuring message about his grandparents, indicating that they are at peace and surrounded by love. Reports have indicated that Jimmy’s condition has progressively worsened, requiring the use of a wheelchair, while Rosalynn uses a walker.
The couple celebrated 77 years of marriage in 2023, but sadly, Rosalynn passed away in November. Jimmy reflected on her vital support throughout their lives together.
Jason noted the emotional impact of Rosalynn’s passing on Jimmy, as the family navigates his health challenges. He also expressed gratitude for the decision to have Jimmy receive hospice care in Plains, a place that brings him comfort.
Plans are in place to donate the Carter family home to the National Park Service, ensuring its legacy as a historical site. Jason believes there’s no better place for Jimmy to spend his final days than in a town he deeply cherishes.
As of September 2024, Jason mentioned that there had been little change in Jimmy’s health. On October 1, 2024, the former president will celebrate his 100th birthday with a concert titled “Jimmy Carter 100: A Celebration in Song,” featuring various artists to honor his legacy.
