Last week, my mom came to visit me in a small town near Chicago. She brought homemade groceries from the farm to make sure my little one and I could eat fresh, healthy food. After staying with us for three days, she decided it was time to go back. She’s already 70, and I’m her youngest child, so traveling back and forth isn’t easy for her.
When we got to the bus station, I noticed something was off.
«Sweetheart, I’m not feeling well,» she said.
«Let’s go back to the hospital. Stay one more day in the city!» I suggested.
«No, I need to get home.»
It was hard to convince her otherwise. So, I went up to the bus driver and asked:
«Could you please keep an eye on my mom? She’s not feeling well.»
«Maybe she shouldn’t travel?» he asked.
«She’s very stubborn.»
«Alright, don’t worry,» he said.
After the bus left, I couldn’t settle down. Instead of going home, I sat in the park. After some time, my phone rang.
«This is Greg, the bus driver.»
«What happened?» I asked, panicked.
«Don’t worry, everything’s fine. But your mom’s condition worsened on the way, so I took her to the hospital. I’ll pass you over to the doctor.»
The doctor took the phone.
«You should be very grateful to this driver. It was close to being a serious issue. He even went off his route to take your mom to the hospital with all the passengers.»
My mom had nearly had a heart attack. I quickly found someone to watch my child and rushed to be with her. Thankfully, everything turned out okay. From that moment, I knew I had to find that driver. Back in town, I found out his name, waited for him, and bought a small gift to say thanks.
«Why all this?» he asked, surprised.
«Because people like you deserve to be appreciated!»
«I only hope someone would do the same for my mom,» he said.
This driver moved me deeply. People like him are true heroes, and their actions should serve as an example to all of us.
