We all have that one relative who constantly gets caught up in stories that leave us either shaking our heads or laughing in disbelief. Whether they’re always meddling in things that aren’t their business, making impossible demands, or saying such ridiculous things that you could write a book about them.
1. My sister-in-law got pregnant a couple of months before I did. During her ultrasound, they told her it was a boy. She was really upset, and it took a while to calm her down. Then, when my husband and I went for our ultrasound, they showed us we were having a girl. We were thrilled, and I called my mother-in-law to share the news. There was silence on the other end of the line, and then she said, “Oh, poor Emily will be so disappointed; she really wanted a girl.” I felt really hurt.
2. My mother-in-law has been trying to break up my marriage for a while now because, according to her, I’m “not good enough” for her son. We just see life differently. To her, working from home isn’t a real job, once you have kids, you stop thinking about yourself, and the most important thing for a woman is to please her husband and his mom. My husband often works late, but that evening he was home with me and the kids. His mom called and asked him to come over, but he said, “I can’t, I’m working.” He just didn’t want to go. The next day, he was listening to some fantasy story about how she supposedly saw me hugging another man outside our building. After that, he stopped talking to her.
3. My 6-year-old daughter kept talking non-stop about a café where they serve “princess cakes.” I made a reservation, and we headed there together with her, my mom, and my mother-in-law. My daughter was excited, dressed up in her favorite dress, and said she was going to be just like a princess. But my mother-in-law kept making comments about how it was a waste of money, the cakes were silly, and the place was pretentious. This ruined my daughter’s joy, especially when my mother-in-law told her that princesses needed to eat proper food. I finally pulled her aside and asked her to keep her opinions to herself. She started arguing, and I asked her to leave. Now, she’s telling everyone I kicked her out of the café.
4. My mother-in-law always had something to say—”you’re doing this wrong” or “you’re looking at that wrong.” I eventually stopped paying attention to her. Then she started nagging my wife, saying, “you married the wrong guy; I wanted a different son-in-law.” My wife told her, “I wasn’t looking for a son-in-law for you; I was finding a husband for me, and I’m happy.” That was 14 years ago, and I still keep my distance from my mother-in-law.
5. My wife and I are regular people with slightly above-average salaries. We took out a 20-year mortgage and managed to pay it off in six. But none of our relatives will ever know because they’re always blowing money and have 3 or 4 credit cards each. We spend wisely. My wife was dying to share our good news, but at a family gathering, my uncle said, “When are you guys going to pay off that mortgage? I was hoping to borrow money to upgrade my car.” And my mom chimed in, “Yeah, I could use some help redoing my kitchen.” They were already dividing up our money! I had dreamed of hosting a big family dinner to celebrate paying off the mortgage, but instead, my wife and I quietly celebrated at home.
6. My mom always finds someone to blame, even over the smallest things. For example, we were headed somewhere, and she asked if I was going to bring my sunglasses. I said no, so she didn’t bring hers either. Of course, when the sun was too bright, it was my fault because she didn’t bring her sunglasses!
7. We’ve been married for 28 years. We both always worked full-time jobs, but everything related to the kids and the house was my responsibility. Four years ago, my husband got laid off, and he hasn’t looked for a job since. A year ago, I told him that since I was still working, he should cook dinner, wash the dishes, and do the laundry. Now, he’s constantly complaining that I’m not helping him and even thinks I’m a horrible person for making him do housework. But I’m the one with a job!
8. My mom used my rice cooker and then told me I had to clean it.
9. A friend told me this one. Her mom used to make her eat oatmeal, which she hated. One day, her mom said, “If you finish your oatmeal, there’s a surprise!” So, she ate the whole bowl quickly. And what was the surprise? Another bowl of oatmeal! She’s still mad about it to this day.
10. I got married a week ago. My aunt and her daughter, my cousin, were invited to the wedding and stayed at my mom’s house. My wedding dress was stored there before and after the wedding. A few days later, I went over to visit, and my aunt was showing me photos on her phone. Suddenly, I saw a picture of my cousin wearing my wedding dress! My aunt tried to scroll past it quickly, but I’d already seen it. I was furious that they did this without asking me. Now my mom is blaming me for making her guests feel uncomfortable!
11. Two years ago, I lent my sister some money because she and her husband were struggling financially. Then we both inherited money from our grandmother, but she still hasn’t paid me back, saying I don’t need it because I’m better off than she is. She and her husband used the inheritance however they wanted. Now she’s angry at me for asking for the money back!
12. When my husband and I were planning our wedding, my future mother-in-law kept butting in. On the day of the wedding, she showed up in a white dress. When it was time for the photos, she kept getting in the way. I asked her to step aside, but she wouldn’t listen. So, we ended up with no photos of just the two of us. I ended up photoshopping her out of the pictures. Now, she’s mad at me!
13. When I was younger, I dated a guy who was 7 or 8 years older than me. On our first meeting, his mom pulled me aside within five minutes and told me I needed to marry him and have kids right away because he was getting older and had “played around” long enough. And not just any kid—a girl, because she already had a grandson. I was stunned and casually replied, “Sure, right now.” After watching how the guy called his mom every morning and checked in with her every evening, I realized this wasn’t the life for me.
