That evening, I received a notification that someone had transferred $200 into my account. Pay day was still far off, and I had just received my advance recently. The first thought that came to my mind was, “Could it be that my husband gave me such a generous gift before the holidays?”

“Thank you, sweetheart! I wasn’t expecting such a surprise!”
“What are you talking about?”
“Well, the money. Wasn’t it you who sent it?”
Mike snatched my phone irritably and locked himself in the room. He hid from me for almost an hour. Then, he burst out of the bedroom and blurted:
“It’s probably a mistake. I’ll figure it out tomorrow.”
“But aren’t you leaving for D.C. tomorrow? What about your business trip?”
“I’ll go later. Just don’t answer if someone calls from this number. It’s a scam, a new kind of fraud.”

I noticed that Mike’s behavior was odd. That evening, he rushed to my phone every time I got a notification, as if he was anxious about something. Was he a little jealous or nervous? But, as they say, two and two make four.

I decided not to spend the money and froze the account at the bank.

“Sweetheart, why don’t you go visit your parents? You’ve been missing them so much, and it’s been a while since you last saw them. The holidays just started, it’s the perfect time.”

I was surprised by the idea. Mike never liked my trips to my parents and was always against me going to the countryside. He believed they might convince me to divorce him. And now, suddenly, such unexpected concern. He even promised to buy the ticket.

In the morning, I was woken up by a message. The number was unknown, but it wasn’t hidden.

“Hi. My name is Kate, and I’m your husband’s girlfriend. Mike has said you’re pretty dumb, but I didn’t think this dumb. By the way, it was me who sent you the money. I thought you’d figure out what’s going on. You know, fishing for clues. But now I regret wasting my time and money on you. I hope you finally understand after this message, idiot. Let Mike go, he only loves me.
P.S. Happy holidays!”

And three mean smiley faces at the end.

You know, at first, I thought it was some kind of joke or that scammers had reached a new level. But then, when Mike was in the shower, I quietly took his phone and checked his contacts. What I found clarified everything.

Yes, Kate really was Mike’s mistress. They had been seeing each other for almost a year behind my back. All those “conferences,” business trips, and late nights at work were just a cover. I really was an idiot, trusting him so much! I pulled a suitcase from the closet and started packing all his things. Well, more like I threw them off the hangers and even stomped on them.

Mike tried to justify himself, coming up with stupid excuses, but I wasn’t going to listen. Luckily, my parents had bought this apartment, and he had no rights to it. In the end, I threw those same $200 in his face.

It turned out that the best gift for me was our breakup.

How would you react if you were in this girl’s shoes? Why?
