Dolly Parton, a legendary figure in country music, has faced her share of grief despite her fame. In November 2024, she mourned the loss of her older brother, David Parton, who passed away at the age of 82.
Dolly, born on January 19, 1946, grew up in Tennessee as the fourth of twelve children in a close-knit but impoverished family. Her father, Robert Lee Parton, worked as a sharecropper and could not read or write, while her mother, Avie Lee Parton, entertained the family with stories and songs. Despite their struggles, the Parton household was full of music, which played a pivotal role in their lives. Robert passed away in 2000, and Avie followed in 2003, but both were staunch supporters of Dolly’s musical aspirations.
Dolly has often spoken about her family’s musical background. Her sister, Rachel Dennison, once said, “Singing was like breathing at home.” Music also resonated with other members of the family, including Floyd Parton, a younger brother born in 1957. Floyd pursued a career in music as well, co-writing hits like “Nickels and Dimes” and “Rockin’ Years” with Dolly, both of which topped the charts. Sadly, Floyd passed away in 2018 at the age of 61. Dolly honored him at a private memorial service, performing a family rendition of “Rockin’ Years.”
Another musically gifted sibling was Randy Parton, born in 1953. Randy enjoyed a successful career as a singer-songwriter, performing in Dolly’s band and at Dollywood. He also recorded notable duets with Dolly, including “Old Flames Can’t Hold A Candle To You.” Randy passed away in 2021 after battling cancer. Reflecting on his contributions, Dolly described him as “a great singer, writer, and entertainer.”
On November 15, 2024, the Parton family faced another loss with the passing of David Parton at his home in White Pine, Tennessee. Born in 1942, David dedicated his career to construction, retiring as a bridge-building superintendent with Simpson Construction. His work included projects in Kingsport, Johnson City, and Knoxville. David is survived by his wife, Kay Parton, their three children, five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. While Dolly has not commented publicly on his passing, their sister Stella Parton announced the news on social media.
“David passed away peacefully this morning,” Stella wrote. “He was always referred to as sweet David because of his kindness, loyalty, and soft-spoken nature. He was also a U.S. Marine.” In a follow-up post, she shared cherished memories of her brother.
