In a horrifying attack that’s shaken the nation, a man impersonating a police officer broke into the home of Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman. In the middle of the night, he fatally shot both Hortman and her husband as they slept.

Authorities confirmed the same man had also targeted another official, State Senator John Hoffman, wounding him and his wife in a separate attack. Both crimes are believed to be politically motivated.
The suspect—described as dangerous and still on the run—has triggered a manhunt and nationwide fear among public officials. The attacks come amid a rise in political threats across the country, prompting many to ask: Are our leaders safe anymore?

Lawmakers across the U.S. are calling for emergency protection measures. Citizens are left reeling. The violence marks a chilling moment in American politics—and a turning point in how we talk about safety and democracy.
