She Bought a $5 Plant—And Discovered It Was Nearly Extinct

While browsing at a neighborhood garage sale, 32-year-old Clara picked up a quirky-looking potted plant for just $5. It looked old, slightly wilted, and no one seemed interested. A week later, her botanist friend came over for coffee, glanced at the plant—and froze. What Clara had unknowingly purchased was a nearly extinct species called the Encephalartos woodii, once thought to be lost outside of protected zones. Experts estimated it was over 70 years old!

The plant was carefully moved to a botanical research facility and now has its own temperature-controlled greenhouse. Clara was honored with a plaque naming her as the donor who helped preserve history. “I just thought it looked weird and cute,” she laughed. Turns out, the rarest treasures often hide in plain sight. Clara still collects plants—but now she checks each one twice. You never know what secrets an old pot of dirt might hold.
