Kmart began in 1899 as the S.S. Kresge Company. Sebastian Spurling Kresge started the firm. In Memphis, Tennessee, he began his career with another major store, John McCrory’s. However, once the partners split up, Kresge became the sole proprietor of the shop.

Soon after, he opened outlets in eight locations between Chicago and Pittsburgh. From the 1920s until the 1960s, Kresge’s shops grew steadily. Then, in 1962, retail pioneer Harry Cunningham pushed the business into the large-scale discount market by building Michigan’s first full-sized Kmart.
When the first Walmart shop opened in Rogers, Arkansas, there were two Kmart stores. Harry Cunningham and Sam Walton, who started Walmart, were influenced by Anne and Hope’s business in Rhode Island.

The “Blue Light Special” was established in 1965 to promote merchandise for sale at Kmart. “Attention Kmart Customers,” an announcement was made over the loudspeaker to inform shoppers. S.S. Kresge created history in 1976 when it opened 271 outlets in one year. It was also the first retailer to open 17 million square feet of store space in a single year.
Kmart used to sell items promoted by celebrities such as Jaclyn Smith and Martha Stewart. Kmart shops contributed approximately 95 percent of S.S. Kresge’s revenues in 1977, prompting the company to alter its name to Kmart Corporation.

Kmart overtook Sears as the second-largest retailer in the United States in 1990. However, Walmart exceeded it that year since many of the shops needed to be updated. They were soon given a facelift and a new logo. Kmart overtook Sears as the second-largest retailer in the United States in 1990. However, it gradually deteriorated after that owing to stiff competition from Walmart and Target.
Even Martha Stewart’s celebrity couldn’t boost Kmart sales. Many of its shops did poorly. Kmart purchased Sears in 2005 in order to consolidate retail dominance. For a decade, the shops fared similarly and decreased in number throughout the nation. Kmart, on the other hand, was always the darling of every American.
