When a couple comes home to discover a stranger living there, the police say that they can’t help them

Danielle Cruz, a lady from Cook County, Illinois, was intending to sell her family’s home in the Chatham area. Her husband completely renovated the house, and they hired a handyman to handle some minor repairs. But, the handyman phoned Danielle one day and informed her that the property was not empty and that someone was living there!

They first assumed he was kidding, but they soon discovered that a lady had moved into their house with all of her possessions. They phoned the cops and went to the home they were about to sell to have the woman removed from their home. But then there was another surprise. The cops stated they couldn’t help the squatter since she claimed she had a month-to-month lease with the owner, which was obviously false.

They said they couldn’t show she was trespassing. «We have to go to court and go through the eviction procedure,» Danielle, visibly upset, stated. Despite Danielle’s denial that she had ever met the lady who inhabited her property, police stated that the woman possessed a lease contract, which changed the issue into a civil matter that could only be settled in eviction court.

The issue is that such lawsuits may take months or even a year to resolve, leaving Danielle and her husband helpless to interfere. «I definitely feel mis.t.r.eated.» «I own this home, and it’s unsettling to think that anybody might simply break in and take over,» Danielle added. She even said she tried to contact the squatter to figure out a solution, but the lady refused.

«See, we’re trying to live the American dream.» They say we own property, but we’re simply trying to support our family. Then something like this occurs, and you almost don’t want to own anything else again. It’s not worth it. » Danielle’s neighbors rallied around her, hoping that her issues would be handled soon. «It’s horrible,» one of the neighbors said.

It’s theft, and it’s wrong. » Another neighbor, Quintara Smith, said, «No one wants to come back, and someone is living on the property.» It’s frightening. Anyone might be affected by this. » Such situations, according to Chicago real estate attorney Mo Dadkhah, are not uncommon in Cook County. The video below has further information.
