This summer, Beyoncé isn’t just releasing hive-stirring records; she’s also here to share love and empower her peers. She used her voice for a new Gatorade ad that celebrates the achievements of her friend Serena Williams.

“When history writes her down, we’ll start where she left off.” “At love,” Bey says in the commercial, her distinctive voice setting the tone. “It’s a love we’ll remember for years, a love that sparked a movement.” A movement to constantly accept yourself for who you are and who you can become. To be so in love with one’s own personality that one’s fundamental soul cannot be contained. to adore the sound of one’s own voice and the way one moves to feel unabashedly like a queen, with an indefinite crown. You should appreciate every muscle and every contour your body has. ”

The ad, titled “For Serena, With Love,” was directed by Jake Nava and comes just days after Williams said in a Vogue column that she is “growing away from tennis.” Because of that statement, the current US Open will almost certainly be her last, giving Gatorade an opportunity to pay tribute to Williams’ illustrious career. Beyoncé’s voice serves as the backdrop for graphics that blend notable moments from Williams’ career with depictions of active and joyous women of color of all ages. Bey then praises Williams for being true to herself and embracing her identity as a “proud Black lady, a mom, a dreamer, a leader.” The tennis pun “Love Means Everything” appears over the screen at the end of the ad.
It’s not the first time Beyoncé and Williams have worked together. Williams appeared in Beyoncé’s acclaimed “Lemonade” music video, and Bey contributed a song to the soundtrack of King Richard, this year’s film about Williams’ father and his family’s upbringing in Compton. In a recent on-court interview with ESPN, Williams talked about her leaving the sport, which she doesn’t want to be called a “retirement.”
“I always have to give it my all….” “It’s tougher to walk away than it is to stay,” she explained. “Life has additional chapters, call it evolution.” She said that her next steps will include focusing on her company, Serena Ventures, which invests in “women, people of color, and men alike,” as well as spending time at home to reconnect with her “spiritual life.”
