Kevin Bacon, the Hollywood hunk, melted hearts everywhere in 2020 with his emotional tribute to his wife Kyra Sedgwick. Bacon and Sedgwick first met in the 1970s, when Bacon appeared in a local play that Sedgwick had seen with her brother. Bacon was 19 years old at the time, while she was only 12 years old.
“A little girl had just seen the matinée, and her brother said, ‘You liked that actor, go tell him you liked him,’ and it was Kyra,” he said on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson in 2014. “She was a young girl, about 12 years old.”
Although Sedgwick did not think he was her type at the time, he grew on her and they later met again. They married in 1988, when Sedgwick was 23 years old.
They have been married for more than 30 years. Bacon celebrated their 32nd anniversary by posting a throwback photo from their wedding on social media in September 2020. He took to Instagram to express his appreciation to his very special lady, Sedgwick. The actor wrote a simple, loving message to his wife in which he gushed about their many years together. “11,680 days with you,” Bacon wrote in the caption of his Instagram post. “Thank you for making each one count.”
Fans of the couple quickly commented below the post to express their admiration for their happy, loving marriage and to send the couple their best wishes. Some chose the amusing route, calculating the exact minutes and seconds Bacon and Sedgwick have spent together. Others, on the other hand, praised the two lovebirds and their strong relationship.
However, the couple has had their share of difficulties. Bacon and Sedgwick were victims of history’s largest Ponzi scheme in 2008, and they lost all of their savings. “We found out when the rest of the world found out,” Sedgwick told People. “Kev had been working professionally since he was seventeen, and I had been working professionally since I was fifteen, and it was our savings, all the money we had…. It had been a long day.”
While it was upsetting at the time, Bacon and Sedgwick both said it taught them to value what is truly important in life: their children and their health.
The couple spoke to Glamour magazine about their long-term relationship, explaining how they support one another and their respective careers.
“Kyra felt really strongly that, when she started having children, she needed to be there for them,” Bacon admitted at the time. Because of the children, she would frequently make career decisions that were not in her best interests. We continued to live in New York because we wanted to raise our children there, but there was more work in Los Angeles.”
While Sedgwick took the reins first, her husband reciprocated when she got her big break on the award-winning show “The Closer.”
“Then, when The Closer came along—I don’t even consider this a sacrifice—the kids were still in high school or junior high, and she had this opportunity to go out to California and be a lead in a TV show. ‘Listen, I’ll stay with the kids,’ I said. This was the first time in our lives that I said, ‘I’ll stay home, I’m not taking anything.'”
