Many of us remember Bon Jovi as a singer from the 1980s. And not everyone is aware that he was a major inspiration for the social project Soul Kitchen.
Soul Kitchen is a non-profit organization established by the singer’s foundation. This is a restaurant where no prices are displayed. The idea behind this establishment is that those who can afford to pay pay $20, while those in need can eat for free while also volunteering, for example, in the kitchen or in the garden where fruits and vegetables grow.
Data from the Soul Kitchen website suggests that 51% of the food given away in the restaurant is funded by donations, and the rest is thanks to volunteer work.
Jon Bon Jovi opened his first such restaurant in his hometown of Red Bank, New Jersey. And the second is near Toms River, in an area that was impacted by Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Although this is a charitable project, the restaurants provide exceptionally high-quality food to their visitors.
There you can try a dishes with mint, grapes, feta cheese and almonds, orange pulp in the form of a vinaigrette or pork with mashed chutney.
The restaurant serves more than 104,000 dishes a year.
