18-Year-Old Recipe Book The Author Is Donating His Royalties…

When Sahana Vij was five years old, her mother taught her how to make French toast. They worked together to make soup and enchiladas and volunteered at a Seattle shelter, serving and sharing meals with needy families…

«Food is a huge, huge, huge way to communicate with people,» Vij, now an 18-year-old UC Irvine student, tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue. «Food is what brings us together.»

Vij was inspired to start cooking and sharing her meals with others after volunteering with her mother.

Vij learned to bake as a child in Redmond, Washington, and experimented with various recipes every week. «I’d always cook it for other people,» she says. «Food was a way for me to communicate with other individuals.»

«Bake Away,» Vij’s cookbook, was written while she was still in high school, and it will be published on October 26 at Target, Whole Foods, and Kroger’s…

Vij is donating the proceeds from her book to the non-profit charity No Kid Hungry. For every dollar donated, No Kid Hungry distributes ten meals.

«You ought to eat,» she advises. «You need to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner to feed your body, especially while learning.»

If her first printing run goes well, Vij plans to feed 700,000 children.

«As many as possible,» Sahana says. «To me, it feels like a requirement.»

For Father’s Day, she gave a copy of her book to Thomas Keller, chef at The French Laundry. He writes on her website, «This young baker gives me hope for the future.»

Vij wishes to utilize baking to change the world. She plans to pursue an MBA after college and open her own bakery, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting No Kid Hungry.

«I want to make a difference in the world,» she says. «I wish to motivate others to continue producing, and I hope to continue baking and sharing what I’ve done with others.»
