The 92-year-old pianist dazzles the audience. Elaine Lebar suffers from dementia, but she recalls her love of music. Her rendition of Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata went viral on TikTok in 2019. “I’m not sure about it,” Elaine says before starting the third movement of Beethoven’s famous piece. Lebar performed at a nursing home in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts, while her daughter Randy Lebar was recording.

Randi stated that the COVID-19 outbreak prevented her from visiting her mother for several months this year. When she returned, she posted a TikTok video of Elaine playing “to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s disease and the impact pandemic-related limitations have on this demographic and their families.” According to Lebar, requests began to appear soon after.

One was for the Moonlight Sonata, which she remembered recording in 2019. “I had no idea this would become viral,” Randy admitted. “My mother, a professional musician, has terrible dementia, but still finds meaning in her life at the piano.”
