Many people do not have access to education, and while it is mandatory in many countries to attend the foundation years, not all families can afford this luxury. The adult illiteracy rate in the United States is 8.1%, which is surprisingly higher than in other similarly developed countries.

When other factors such as migration and age are included, the numbers can skyrocket. Felipe Lira’s story is one of several with comparable circumstances. Mr. Lira has lived in California, USA, for many years and was never able to learn to write owing to a lack of resources; yet, thanks to his family’s support and his willingness to go on, he did.

His great-niece, Kennya Ramos, took to social media to promote his grandfather’s achievements and accomplishments, and after accomplishing his objective, the first thing she did was capture it in his own handwriting. All of his grandchildren’s names.

“My uncle did not attend school, so I’m teaching him to write, and he wrote the names of his grandchildren for the first time,” Ramos wrote in the post. She set up a Twitter account for Don Felipe in order to share more information about his classes, and I want to thank her for the messages of support and encouragement she received. “Everyone’s love and support made my uncle cry!”
