July 26th, Nanyang, Henan, China. The temperature reached 43.5 degrees Celsius on this scorching day. Many others decided to stay inside due to the heat, but a slim boy carrying a heavy rucksack made his way toward the bridge. The kid intended to search through the trash by the bridge. On his way to the bridge, he discovered an empty bottle. Without hesitation, he snatched it and slipped it inside his backpack.
It was the school holidays now and why is the boy toiling to earn some money?
The reason was he wanted to pay for his stepmother’s medical bills!
Wangzhen, a 12-year-old boy, was abandoned when he was two years old by his mother. His father, Wangman, was working on a construction site when his right hand was accidentally cut. He is now working part-time, and his pay is insufficient to keep his family afloat.
Wangzhen’s grandmother passed away nine years ago, leaving a hefty debt that compelled him to rely only on his grandfather.
Later in life, he met his stepmother, Liang Yingchun, and for a time, the three of them lived peacefully together.
Unfortunately, their joy did not last long…
Liang Yingchun suffers from acute lymphoblastic leukemia and was admitted to the hospital for treatment. Although Liang Yingchun is his stepmother, Wangzhen would visit her at the hospital every day. He would feed her and when it gets too hot, he would wipe the sweat off and take care of his stepmother in every possible way he could.
In October, Wangzhen was involved in a car accident on the roadside in front of his house. It was a very bad accident that nearly claimed his life. He nearly lost his right leg.
Until now, the scars are still visible on his right thigh and ankle
“With half a day’s work of collecting recycling materials, I could earn around 2.50 Yuan. Aunty Liang(stepmother) treated me and my grandfather well. This time, the doctors said if her sickness was not treated, she would die. I could not bear to let her die so I am going to earn enough money to treat her!” Wangzhen said.
Wangzhen would give a broad smile whenever he talks about his stepmother
Everyone was moved by the child’s filial piety, but therapies for lymphoblastic leukemia are prohibitively expensive. Medical costs could exceed one million Yuan. The reporters were hesitant to give him the reality because it would be too much for the young Wangzhen.
It breaks my heart to see such an obedient child facing such a cold, brutal existence! We pray for miracles and for kindhearted people to assist this impoverished family in their time of need.
