Life is unpredictable, and we never know what lies ahead of us. Raimundo Arrudo Sobrinho is the man who knows it best. During Brazil’s military dictatorship in the 1970s, he became homeless and spent the next 35 years of his life on the streets. Because he was filthy, few people would approach him, thus he spent much of his days alone. The papers and his pen were his only friends!

This homeless man was a poet who would scribble down his thoughts, but no one ever got to read any of them. Fortunately, things was about to change when a very special woman named Shalla crossed his path. She observed Raimundo was usually writing something, and her curiosity kept her awake until she approached him one day and spoke about his writings.
After reading his work, she was stunned by his tremendous talent, so she decided to do something for him, and her deed transformed this man’s life forever. Shalla believed it would be a disgrace not to share Raimundo’s poems with the world, so she shared them on Facebook alongside his life narrative. Many individuals commented on the post, praising his work as absolutely exceptional.

They shared it with their friends, and soon more than 100,000 people were following the Raimundo page and couldn’t wait for more poems to be shared on it. It only took one woman to notice a homeless man’s talent for his life to be turned upside down. The most amazing part was that one of the people who discovered Shalla’s Facebook page was Raimundo’s long-lost brother. He recognized Raimundo beneath the filthy clothes and long beard and approached him.

A really poignant interaction was going to take place, and it touched the emotions of many people. Raimundo was welcomed into his family’s home after being reunited with them. He finally had a space to call his own. Years spent on the streets had become a distant memory. The documentary “The Conditioned” detailed Raimundo’s remarkable life story.

It teaches us that regardless of our wealth or appearance, we are all humans in search of our place in the world. Shalla’s simple act of kindness went a long way toward effecting change that neither she nor Raimundo thought was possible.
