Between the ages of 9 and 12 months, babies typically start to explore language, but it’s vital to remember that there is significant variety in what is deemed normal. Some infants may start talking as late as 15 months, but some may start surprising you by saying their first words as early as 6 months.

Babies first make endearing coos and babbling noises, such as the well-known “ahh” and “goo.” As they get older, they learn to mimic the rhythms and sounds of the language that is all around them and eventually start saying simple words like “dada” or “mama.” Here’s a little child who may not have perfected her vocal communication skills, but her body language and facial expressions make it quite evident what she’s trying to say!
In a touching video, we get to see Lilly, a lively infant, playingfully interacting with her animal friend’s food. Perhaps intrigued by the little troublemaker, Lilly’s mother chooses to confront her about it. What comes next is pure gold for toddlers: Lilly angrily rejects any wrongdoing and even shows a trace of annoyance at her mother’s line of inquiry. This scene may bring to mind a few adults you know!
