5 Effective Home Remedies for Combating Mosquitoes and Gnats: Unlike Chemicals, These Methods Are Harmless to Health

Discover and Use: Mosquitoes and other pesky flying bugs can really put a damper on your outdoor fun. Their bites aren’t just annoying—they can also trigger allergic reactions, so it’s smart to prep with protection in advance.

Sure, you can find all sorts of sprays, creams, bracelets, and gadgets in stores to keep the bugs at bay—they work, but they come with risks. They pack chemicals that might cause irritation, allergic reactions, or even burns (stuff like ethyl butylacetylaminopropionate, diethyltoluamide, propylene glycol, allantoin, disodium EDTA).

A safer bet? Turn to the tried-and-true home remedies. We found out five effective ways to fend off those insect bites. They’re easy on the wallet and easy to find!

Home Remedies for Mosquitoes

1. Vanilla

Mosquitoes can’t stand the scent of vanilla, so an effective way to repel them is with a solution based on it.

To make this homemade remedy, simply mix 2 teaspoons of vanillin (not vanilla sugar) with 1 cup of water. Stir it until it’s all dissolved, then pour it into a spray bottle. Give your skin, clothes, or tent a good spritz with this mixture. It’ll keep those pesky mosquitoes away for a few hours, and you can reapply as needed.

2. Spirit Solution

Here’s another simple homemade remedy for keeping mosquitoes away outdoors: a spirit solution with essential oils.

To make this, mix alcohol with water in a 1:1 ratio, then add a few drops of essential oil (eucalyptus, geranium, or lavender). Give the bottle a good shake to blend everything, then apply it to your body and clothing.

3. Clove

Mosquitoes can’t stand the potent, sharp scent of cloves. It practically blinds these bloodsuckers, all thanks to the aldehydes found in clove oil.

To whip up a homemade repellent, grab about a tablespoon of cloves and some boiling water. Let the cloves steep in a cup of boiling water for 15 minutes. Then, use a spray bottle to apply the solution to your skin.

4. Valerian

Flying bugs also hate the strong aroma of valerian.

To make an effective solution against mosquitoes, get your hands on some valerian root (you can find it at pharmacies). Toss it in a pot with about 6 cups of water. Bring it to a boil, then let it sit for an hour in an airtight container. Use this solution to wipe your skin or spray your clothes.»

5. Essential Oils

Essential oils act as natural and budget-friendly repellents, effectively protecting against mosquito, gnat, and other blood-sucking insect invasions. The most effective ones include lavender, peppermint, basil, eucalyptus, lemon balm, geranium, and lemon oils.

Mix approximately 4 fluid ounces of water with 5 drops of any of these essential oils (it’s not recommended to mix them together) and transfer the solution into a spray bottle. Spritz it on your body or clothes.
